IT Career:#

  • Systems Administrator, Analog Design Automation (1999-2002), Saskatoon, SK, Canada, and Ottawa, ON, Canada. Setup and maintenance of seven Debian Linux servers, and two Debian Linux clusters (16 nodes, and 40 nodes). Maintained a Sun Microsystems file server. Architected solutions, and provided tech support to a team of 12 software developers and testers (ADA was later acquired by Synposys). Network technologies involved: NFS, NIS, Linux firewall, Apache web servers, databases (MySQL, postgresql), the Bugzilla bug tracking system, a Mailman mailing list management system, and an Postfix email server. Also did the networking, and security. A hacker was caught breaking in remotely, requiring me to do a complete emergency rebuild of the file server, restoring from backups. Did a migration of all on-house services from the original Saskatoon office to a new Ottawa office.
  • Enterprise Tech Support, Sophos (2003-2004) (Vancouver, BC, Canada). Provided Enterprise Support on the software product PureMessage, an enterprise anti-spam and anti-virus server solution. PureMessage integrates to Sendmail, to provide a mail filter to incoming email for a whole enterprise.
  • ERP specialist, Business Objects (2004-2005), Vancouver, BC, Canada. Installed and configured Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) servers for the Partners team at Sophos, such as Peoplesoft, Siebel, BAAN, and J.D. Edwards.
  • Systems Administrator, Business Objects (2005-2006), Vancouver, BC, Canada - installed, configured and maintained 240+ UNIX servers for the software development and testing teams, in the Sophos Mainland datacenter. These Unix servers had a variety of Operating Systems: Redhat, Solaris, HP/UX, and AIX. They used NIS and NFS for login, and file serving. I wrote software (named “cull”) which found usages of precious network disk space that needed cleaning up. It automated the periodic emailing of the developers and testers who needed to delete their stale, large folders. It nagged them - as a group, so as to create some peer pressure - to free up the disk space again. I programmed in bash.

Pro Bono IT work (during a long hiatus, having ordained as a Buddhist monk from 2007-2025):#

  • Installed/set up a Drupal website for Birken Forest Monastery (BC, Canada). Debugged countless technical problems during 6 years of residency. Set up a wifi network involving 5 interconnected routers which used WDS (Wireless Distribution System) in the Tomato router firmware, allowing wifi roaming throughout the main monastery buildings.
  • Found that Tisarana Buddhist monastery website (Wordpress) was hacked, and worked with a professional DBA (Nikita Pchelin) to have it rebuilt, thereby saving/re-using the website content, for a fresh Wordpress install. Debugged countless technical problems, including recurring satellite internet outages.
  • Discovered and reported that two more monasteries had been hacked: Wat Buddha Dhamma, of Sydney, Australia, and Nandaka Buddhist Monastery, of mainland Penang, Malaysia.
  • Pioneered (in the world of Buddhism) a new way of video streaming, and self-hosting both video and audio Dhamma Talks, without relying on 3rd-party video platforms like Twitch, or Youtube. The archived video and audio talks: Ajahn Subharo. I used the Jekyll CMS, Open Broadcast System, nginx web server, and Owncast (for live video streaming), on rented Debian VPS’ which I entirely set up myself (at Akamai and OVH hosting services). All content was CC-licensed, thereby preventing advertisement usage, and AI remixing.
  • XMPP chat server (for family and friends). There’s also a Wiki, about it
  • MatterMost Team Server (an Open Source Slack clone): it took dozens of hours of labour to write a tutorial explaining how to install it on a Raspberry Pi
  • OpenWRT and Pi-Hole: It took 100+ hours to set up, then show operation of interconnected servers/services which offer a teenager-restriction-to-Social-Media solution on a home LAN, built entirely out Open Source software. I recorded and posted 3 videos about it
  • Other self-hosted servers/web services I’ve installed and maintained: Heimdall Application Dashboard, mkdocs wiki, calibre-web ebook library, Wireguard VPN, Radicale calendar and contacts, Copyparty fileserver, Kiwix offline document reader, Shiori bookmarks, Flarum Forum, Kanboard Project Organizer, OpenSpeedTest, Immich photo management, Nextcloud cloud services, MariaDB, MySQL db, PostgresQL db, Docker, Incus Containers. I manage six servers using Ansible Infrastructure as Code.
  • Webmaster using Hugo, Wordpress, and Drupal content management systems

Social Service work:#

  • Taught two 9-day residential meditation retreats at Bhrahmavihara Buddhist monastery, Melacca, Malaysia. The group sizes were 16, and 30 people. The groups meditated 6 hours a day, and I gave 3 hours of spoken, recorded instruction per day.
